The Australian Curriculum: Currently at Version 6.0

If you have a hard copy, (printed copy), of the Australian Curriculum, it is important to check what version of you are using.

You can check by looking at the bottom of any page in the footer. This is where the version will be listed.

As of today, 18 February 2014, we are at Version 6.0 of the Australian Curriculum.

You can always check the "Version History" section by clicking the hyperlink in blue on the main page.

There has been no changes to any of the Phase One subjects content descriptions or achievement standards since Version 4.2 on 13 March 2013. If you are using a version older than this, you will not have the correct information.

Availability of the Australian Curriculum 18 February 2014 The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has today made available Australian Curriculum for a number of learning areas. Curriculum for the arts, health and physical education, technologies, economics and business, and civics and citizenship for Foundation – Year 10 is now available on the Australian Curriculum website. States and territories and education authorities will determine implementation timelines for schools. This follows a decision by the Council of federal, state and territory education ministers in November last year that the health and physical education, technologies, economics and business, and civics and citizenship curriculum should be made available to states and territories for their use. The arts curriculum was formally endorsed in July 2013, subject to further consultation with Western Australia. The ACARA Board Chair, Professor Barry McGaw, believes that once these subjects are formally endorsed, it will mark another significant moment in Australian education history. ‘The two–three year development of each subject by ACARA has involved a rigorous and robust process to produce a high-quality national curriculum,’ said Professor McGaw. ‘Over the course of the consultation period for the arts, health and physical education, technologies, economics and business, and civics and citizenship, ACARA consulted extensively with government, state and territory education authorities, business, industry and the general public, receiving nearly 5000 submissions. ‘The Australian Curriculum provides young Australians with what they need to learn as they progress through school in the 21st century,’ added Professor McGaw. ‘The Australian Curriculum has been made available based on a decision by all education ministers and to provide teachers, parents and the wider community with the opportunity to view the most recent version of the curriculum,’ said Professor McGaw. Given the Australian Government’s review of the national curriculum, it also means that all of the F–10 curriculum developed by ACARA is available in one location. ‘We want to ensure openness and that everyone is able to see and read the full scope of what the Australian Curriculum covers,’ added Professor McGaw. In December 2010, the Australian Curriculum was published for English, mathematics, science and history for Foundation – Year 10 and implementation is underway across the country. The national curriculum for geography was published in March 2013. Engage With a Variety of Texts - Year 4 Learning Sequence

The Australian Curriculum:English Year Level Description for Year 4 states that students engage with a variety of texts for enjoyment.

These encompass traditional oral texts including Aboriginal stories, picture books, various types of print and digital texts, simple chapter books, rhyming verse, poetry, non-fiction, film, multimodal texts, dramatic performances, and texts used by students as models for constructing their own work.

The Year Four learning sequence contained in this post was developed by Year 3/4 teacher Melissa Bennett from Woodlands PS in our work as a Teacher Development School.

Communicate: The Who, the What and the How! Year One Learning Sequence

 

The Australian Curriculum:English Rationale states that :

It is through the study of English that individuals learn to communicate with, and build relationships with, others and with the world around them.

Texts

Texts provide the means for communication.

They can be written, spoken or multimodal, and in print or digital/online forms.

So WHO do students communicate with as per the Australian Curriculum?  One way to reflect on this question would be:

1.Using the Year Level Description identify WHO students at your year level need opportunities to communicate with.

2. Is this WHO you would typically plan for the students to communicate with?

3. View the YLD before and after yours. How does it build in terms of WHO students communicate with?

Language Devices

Literary (Language) devices is embedded within the Australian Curriculum: English content descriptions. In particular it falls under the Literature Strand and the Sub Strand of Examining Literature. If you view the AC:E scope and sequence, the thread pertains to "language devices in literary texts including figurative language".

You might also consider using the clip as an example for students to create their own video to demonstrate knowledge of language devices. 

The AC Year Level Descriptions provide detail to teachers on the scope of texts to provide for students. We know that "create" in AC:E glossary is described as the ability to “develop and/or produce spoken, written or multimodal texts in print or digital forms."

For example:  In Years 3 and 4 your students might create a written or spoken review of the youtube clip and it's effect on their understanding of language devices.
                  
                    In Years 5 and 6 your students might create a digital or multi-modal video explanation of language devices in the style of the clip they viewed.

                    In Year 7 your students might create a transformation of text through a written glossary of the language devices mentioned in the clip.

As a Teacher Development School, we are often asked how do teachers cater for composite/split classes when teaching The Australian Curriculum: English? 

There is an informative document in the "Organisation" tab of The Australian Curriculum: English online. The document is called "Implications for Teaching, Assessment and Reporting". You can locate this document by clicking this link http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/English/Implications-for-teaching-assessment-and-reporting .

It states in this document that, "Teachers use the Australian Curriculum content and achievement standards first to identify current levels of learning and achievement and then to select the most appropriate content (possibly from across several year levels) to teach individual students and/or groups of students. This takes into account that in each class there may be students with a range of prior achievement (below, at and above the year level expectations) and that teachers plan to build on current learning." 

It also states "While content descriptions do not repeat key skills, it should be noted that many aspects of the English curriculum are recursive, and teachers need to provide ample opportunity for revision, ongoing practice and consolidation of previously introduced knowledge and skills. Students learn at different rates and in different stages. Depending on each student’s rate of learning, not all of the content descriptions for a particular year level may be relevant to a student in that year level. Some students may have already learned a concept or skill, in which case it will not have to be explicitly taught to them in the year level stipulated. Other students may need to be taught concepts or skills stipulated for earlier year levels." 

It is important therefore, to remember that AC:E is a continuum of learning. It is NOT a syllabus for each year level. To that end, it is irrelevant if the class is composite year levels or a straight year level. We must first identify what the students know and can do, then we must identify the most appropriate content from perhaps across year levels. We also need to provide ongoing opportunity for students to revise and consolidate.

The Scope and Sequence document needs to become your new best curriculum friend.

In this post you will find a learning sequence related to a Foundation class but which has clearly identified content descriptions selected from Year 1. The teacher has identified that her Pre Primary students have mastered the punctuation content descriptions from Foundation and are ready to be taught the next step. 

The Year Level Descriptions for Foundation has remained in place to guide the text types students engage with, who the students will communicate with and what types of texts they will create. 

It is important to note that punctuation within AC:E is more than the "Writing" mode. At the Foundation level it needs to be catered for across "Writing" and "Reading". At Year 1 the content needs to be catered for across "Writing", "Reading" and "Speaking and Listening".

Australian Curriculum: English Year 1/2 Learning Sequence

The Year One/Two learning sequence contained in this post was developed by Year One/Two teacher Megan Wilkinson from Woodlands PS in our work as a Teacher Development School.

The AC:E content is written as a continuum of understandings and skills. In terms of composite classes it is important to look for the build between year levels in content descriptions. 

 

 In the "Organisation" tab of The Australian Curriculum online, there is an informative document entitled, "Implications for Teaching, Assessment and Reporting." Part of this document states: "Teachers use the Australian Curriculum content and achievement standards first to identify current levels of learning and achievement and then to select the most appropriate content (possibly from across several year levels) to teach individual students and/or groups of students. This takes into account that in each class there may be students with a range of prior achievement (below, at and above the year level expectations) and that teachers plan to build on current learning"  Therefore it is important for teachers to ascertain WHAT skills and knowledge students already bring to the learning sequence, WHAT misunderstandings they have, and then adjust/devise the learning sequence in response. The ENTITLEMENT of the students is to be provided with opportunities to learn the AC:E content - at whatever stage in their learning that content sits.  

 

The learning sequence uses the Year Level Descriptions from both Year 1 and Year 2. At both the Year One and Year Two level the sequence addresses Imaginative texts through creating spoken and written poetry and performances. You can see this is highlighted on the planning sheet below.
